Matilda Elizabeth Herbert, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025, at the age of 84, surrounded by her beloved family and loved ones. Born on May 4, 1941, in Maryland, Matilda embraced life with a happy-go-lucky spirit that endeared her to all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Matilda’s devoted career at the St. Mary’s Nursing Center from April 19, 1971 to March 31, 2004 starting as a nursing assistant and progressing to staffing scheduler reflected her warm-hearted nature and her commitment to helping others. A proud graduate of the St. Mary's Public School System, she navigated her professional journey with diligence and grace.
In her personal life, Matilda was known for her fun-loving personality and her deep love for her family. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards, often bringing joy and laughter to gatherings. Her favorite colors were red and purple, a testament to her vibrant character. Matilda took great pride in her appearance, consistently ensuring her nails and hair were impeccably done, embodying her belief that one should always "stay fly."
Matilda is survived by her loving daughter Kim (Tyrone) Bannister and her son Joseph L. Herbert (Carolyn), who carry forward her remarkable legacy. Additionally, she is remembered fondly by her grandchildren: Justin, Tony, Travis, and Deangelo; great grandchildren: Justin, Jr., Emoni, TJ, AJ, Kyra, Lyla, Ace, Alyssa, Ezra, and Caylin. Matilda also leaves behind her siblings, George Herbert, Theresa Rich, and Cora Herbert, who will cherish her memory and the bond they shared. Her godchildren: Joseph Dent and Dallene Dent Jackson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Nellie Herbert, whose nurturing guidance undoubtedly shaped the beautiful person Matilda became; siblings, Etta Lynch, Walter Herbert, Louise Mason, William Herbert and Joseph Herbert; great grandchildren, Naomi Wills and Callie Wills.
In honor of Matilda's life, a Mass will be held at Sacred Heart in Bushwood, Maryland, on June 4, 2025, starting at 10:00 AM, followed by interment at the same location at 12:15 PM. As we remember Matilda Elizabeth Herbert, we reflect on the love, joy, and laughter she brought into the lives of those around her. Her spirit will live on in the memories of all who had the privilege to know and love her.
