Othernile Gilbert, Jr., affectionately known to family and friends as “Bubble”, was born to Othernile, Sr. and Beatrice Gilbert and raised in Alexandria, Virginia, alongside his beloved siblings. He received his education through the Alexandria City Public School System and, upon graduating, answered the call to serve his country with honor and pride in the United States Army.
Bubble was a man whose presence radiated kindness, generosity, and joy. He loved the Lord and carried his faith in God as the foundation of his life. He never met a stranger and welcomed everyone with open arms. Known throughout the community for hosting his annual Community Day cookouts and holiday cookouts, Bubble made sure that no one ever left hungry or without laughter. He provided the food, the entertainment, and most importantly, the love—never expecting anything in return. These gatherings became a tradition that reflected his true spirit of giving and his belief in the power of family, community, and God’s grace.
Bubble lived a full and remarkable life. He traveled the world, celebrated many milestones, and cherished the time he spent with his family and friends. His faith sustained him, and he gave thanks to God for every blessing. His legacy of love, service, and devotion will forever be remembered by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Othernile, Sr. and Beatrice Gilbert, his sisters, Hazelteen Ledbetter and Bernette Gilbert; nephews, Joseph and Tracy Ledbetter and Kevin Winston; and his nieces, Katrinka Winston and Taty’ana Cooks.
Bubble entered into eternal life on Saturday, August 9, 2025, into the hands of our Almighty God. His gentle, quiet spirit and his legacy of love and devotion will remain in the hearts and minds of those left to cherish his memory.
Othernile “Bubble” Gilbert is survived by his daughters, Shilitta Hughes, Kay “Little” Hughes (Andre), and Francine Hughes-Charter; his son, Harry Hughes (Kenya); his life partner, Burrell Bowie; his grandchildren, Jetavia Hughes, Jayla Hughes, Auzainna Dooley, DeAndre Dooley, Michael Hughes, Nakia Hughes, Makhi Hughes, and Mekail Hughes; and his siblings, Ann Washington, Beatrice McKinney, and William Gilbert (JaNeice); the mother of his children and lifelong friend, Linda Harris, along with numerous nieces and nephews and extended relatives, and many cherished friends.
Bubble’s love for God, his family, and his community will continue to inspire all who knew him.
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me on that day.”
