Rita Nana Ayebea Darko Ateko, affectionately known as Mama Rita, was born on 21st September 1955 at Asante Mampong to Mr. Henry Jacob Darko and Madam Ernestina Asamobea. From her early years, Mama Rita showed great promise, discipline, and a deep sense of responsibility that would shape the remarkable life she lived.
She began her basic education in Aburi, where she laid a strong academic foundation. Her commitment to excellence continued at Yaa Asantewaa Secondary School, where she distinguished herself as a prefect, demonstrating leadership qualities and a caring spirit among her peers.
Mama Rita’s love for teaching became evident early in her life. Driven by her passion to nurture young minds, she pursued teacher training at SDA Training College in Koforidua. Her dedication to education did not stop there; she later furthered her studies and obtained a degree from the University of Education, Winneba, strengthening her knowledge and professional skills.
At a friend’s wedding, destiny brought her together with her beloved husband, Mr. Alfred Kwaku Atuah Ateko. Their union was blessed with beautiful children and grandchildren, whom she raised with love, discipline, and strong Christian values. Mama Rita was a devoted wife and a loving mother who placed her family at the center of her life.
Her teaching career was marked by diligence, patience, and commitment. She served faithfully both within and outside the country, touching the lives of countless students. To many, she was not just a teacher but a mentor and a mother figure who inspired confidence and excellence.
Mama Rita was a woman of deep faith who loved God wholeheartedly. She never took her Christian life lightly and dedicated much of her time to serving God and His people. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, where she served faithfully in several groups. She was also a committed member of Women’s Aglow International. Again, she was a pillar of Kingdom Time International Ministries, where her faith and devotion shone brightly.
Mama Rita was known for her warm and caring nature. She loved cooking and found great joy in preparing meals for her family, friends, and visitors. Her kitchen was a place of love, laughter, and togetherness. She also found comfort and inspiration in gospel music, and one of her favorite songs was “Den na mefa da Yehowa ase,” which reflected her thankful heart and deep faith in God.
Mama Rita peacefully answered the call of her Maker at University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center. Though her departure has left a deep void in our hearts, we remain grateful for the beautiful life she lived and the love she shared with all who knew her.
Mama Rita will be remembered as a kind, hardworking, and God-fearing woman whose life was marked by love, service, and unwavering faith. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, her family, her students, her church, and her community.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”2 Timothy 4:7
